January 2026 ECOM Workshop: Housing Services

Last week’s Empowerment Coalition of Milwaukee (ECOM) session reinforced exactly why this space exists: to bring social service professionals together to connect, share resources, and strengthen how we collectively support Milwaukee residents.

During the ECOM session, focusing specifically on housing services, representatives from multiple agencies shared critical information and updates that directly impact frontline work. The City of Milwaukee’s Department of Neighborhood Services (DNS) highlighted tenant concerns such as lack of heat and unsafe living conditions, as well as resources like Revitalize Milwaukee, which provides free home repairs and comprehensive services for low-income veterans, seniors, and people with disabilities. Programs such as Take Root and home-buying assistance were also discussed, alongside tenant education opportunities and the importance of ensuring agencies are included on shared resource lists.

In addition, the Institute for Community Alliance discussed coordinated entry and how IMPACT 211 streamlines referrals for individuals and families seeking shelter and housing support. Emphasis was placed on partnership and collaboration, making it easier for community organizations to connect clients to the right services at the right time.

Insights also came from the Milwaukee Rental Housing Resource Center (RHRC), which offers legal support for tenants, mediation services, and financial assistance. The RHRC is a collaborative network of local housing and related assistance programs, acting as a one-stop-shop for tenants and landlords facing housing challenges.

Community Advocates Housing staff shared information on the various programs offered including rent abatement, rent withholding, relocation assistance, and housing assistance – all with the intention of making sure local community organizations know where they can refer clients and seek assistance.

What made this ECOM session especially valuable was not just the information shared, but the space itself. ECOM sessions create opportunities for professionals to ask questions, make connections, and learn how different systems intersect. When social services professionals understand each other’s roles and resources, collaboration becomes stronger, and outcomes for our community improve.

February’s ECOM session will be on Autism and Disability Services and will be held on February 18. Registration is now open at https://communityadvocates.net/what-we-do/empowerment-coalition-of-milwaukee.html.
