Some birthdays are marked with cake, candles, and a quiet wish. This year, Leah Bates chose something a little different: movement, community, and meaningful impact.
On Saturday, July 18, Leah Bates hosted 3.6 for 36: Birthday Miles, a birthday run/walk that brought together friends, family, neighbors, and community members in support of the Milwaukee Women’s Center. The event combined two things she loves—fitness and bringing people together—with a cause that felt deeply worth celebrating.
“It was such a great feeling knowing so many people in my circle agree that helping others in our city is important,” Leah said.
When choosing a beneficiary, Leah was drawn to the Milwaukee Women’s Center because of its support for adults, children, and families facing challenges such as domestic violence, homelessness, behavioral health needs, and poverty. The funds raised by Leah and her friends will support the Milwaukee Women’s Center's Children’s Program, which engages children who have witnessed or experienced family violence or homelessness, with a focus on healing, safety, and resilience.
Ten people who participated in Leah’s run/walk and 13 donors helped raise $568 toward a $600 donation to the Milwaukee Women’s Center. Just as important was the feeling of the day: people showing up, cheering each other on, and proving that a small but committed group can make a real difference.
The event was also made sweeter and stronger thanks to generous sponsors, including Aggie’s Bakery, GoMacro, LMNT, Drink ZYN, and Pick ’n Save. Te Bates and Contrast Studios captured the joy and energy of the morning through event photos.
Leah hopes the children and families supported by the Milwaukee Women’s Center feel the care behind the gift. “I hope they feel seen, and I hope they feel loved,” Leah said.
A big thank you goes out to everyone who ran, walked, donated, sponsored, prayed for clear skies, or helped make the day possible. Our deep gratitude to Leah for choosing to honor the Milwaukee Women’s Center on her special day and for showing how joy, movement, and generosity can come together to support families in our community.
