WISN12: 30 Charities Split $1M From Casino's "Miracle On Canal Street"

MILWAUKEE -- Thirty children's charities from southeastern Wisconsin are splitting $989,239, after Potawatomi Bingo Casino announced the amount of money raised during their 2011 "Miracle on Canal Street" program.

The casino said each charity received $32,841. The organizations benefiting from the money are to use the funds to improve the lives of children in the area.

The casino said that the following charities received money this year (county in which charity is located listed after charity name):

  • Agape Community Center of Milwaukee, Inc. - Milwaukee
  • Autism Society of Southeastern Wisconsin, Inc. - Milwaukee
  • Best Buddies Wisconsin - Milwaukee
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee, Inc. - Milwaukee
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Racine & Kenosha Counties, Inc. - Racine/Kenosha
  • Center for Self Sufficiency, Inc. - Milwaukee
  • Christmas Clearing Council of Waukesha County
  • Civic Music Association of Milwaukee, Inc. - Milwaukee
  • COA Youth and Family Centers - Milwaukee
  • Community Advocates, Inc. - Milwaukee
  • First Stage Children's Theater - Milwaukee
  • Friends of Abused Families, Inc. - Washington
  • Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center, Inc. - Milwaukee
  • Hunger Task Force of Milwaukee, Inc. - Milwaukee
  • Keep Greater Milwaukee Beautiful, Inc. - Milwaukee
  • Kids Matter, Inc. - Milwaukee
  • Lutheran Social Services of Wisconsin, Inc. - Milwaukee
  • Milwaukee Public Library Foundation, Inc. - Milwaukee
  • Milwaukee Public Museum, Inc. - Milwaukee
  • Next Door Foundation - Milwaukee
  • Peace Learning Center of Milwaukee, Inc. - Milwaukee
  • Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Wisconsin, Inc. - Milwaukee
  • Skylight Opera Theatre - Milwaukee
  • The Council for the Spanish Speaking, Inc. - Milwaukee
  • The Friends of the Mukwonago Community Library - Waukesha
  • Variety - The Children's Charity of Wisconsin, Inc. - Milwaukee

The casino said that nearly 200 charities applied for a chance to be selected for the 2011 program. Twenty of this year's charities were chosen through a random drawing held in August. The other 10 were selected as signature charities by the program's media partners.
