As part of its Adopt-a-Nonprofit program, FUEL Milwaukee chose Community Advocates as one of its adopted nonprofits for 2011. The young professionals of FUEL Milwaukee put together a partnership between Everest College, Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD), Redline Milwaukee, and a group of volunteer photographers and sound technicians, to launch an exhibit in October 2011 addressing the issue of homelessness.
Called Homeless is Not My Name, and showing at MIAD through October and November 2011, the exhibit aimed to personalize the issue, dispel stereotypes, inspire involvement, and educate on the reality of homelessness in Milwaukee. Through striking portraits and first-person audio, Homeless is Not My Name was designed to shake up visitors' assumptions by introducing them to the actual faces, voices, and stories of people experiencing homelessness.
Stay tuned for potential future showings of the exhibit in the Milwaukee area.
