25th Annual Spring Fling
In a packed ballroom at the Hilton Milwaukee City Center on May 9th, a gathering of supporters, donors, sponsors, volunteers, board members, and staff helped to make some magic. The Spring Fling event was a mix of food, fun, donating, and serious talk about why we do what we do at Community Advocates.
An original video (below) introduced viewers to some Community Advocates clients and the steep challenges they have faced. The video took us along as Project Bridge Program case managers drove to visit clients struggling with homelessness and mental illness. Project Bridge Manager Rosanne Norwood explained, "Homeless people don't necessarily come to you -- you go out and you find them."
We met Donald, a Community Advocates client who tragically lost his sister in Hurricane Katrina after spending over 20 hours in the water, what he described as "the lowest point in my life." Migrating to Milwaukee, Donald suffered a stroke, and then his son was killed in a car accident on the way to visit him.
Following these losses, Donald was homeless until receiving case management and housing through the Project Bridge program. He explained, "When I was first approached by Community Advocates about the housing program, I was overwhelmed, because I thought I'd never have another home in my life."
Community Advocates CEO Joe Volk tied the client stories to CA's mission: "Community Advocates is the last hope for many people who have fallen through the safety net. We need Milwaukee to join with us to make sure Milwaukee is the kind of place where children and people have a warm, safe place to stay at night."
Thank you to the Spring Fling sponsors, including major sponsor, Wisconsin Energy Foundation, and presenting sponsors Town Bank, Associated Bank, and PyraMax Bank.
And thank you to everyone who attended for a fun and inspiring night! We raised more than $60,000 in proceeds to directly benefit our programs and services, which provide access to safe, affordable housing, health care, advocacy and treatment for domestic violence, substance abuse and mental health issues. Your support provides hope to men, women and children as we work together to meet their basic needs. Please enjoy the video below.
